Talented Newbury College English Teacher and Community Learning Programme Leader, Lucy Davey, stunned audiences on ITV’s Romeo and Duet at the weekend, performing hits by Jessie J and Lenny Kravitz.
Oti Mabuse led the musical matchmaking, as singleton Sven stood on the balcony, serenaded by potential love matches that he could hear but not see, in a format reminiscent of the 80s hit Blind Date.
Lucy had just one song to entice her potential Romeo down from the balcony. As the Newbury College Choir member hit all the right notes and defeated the competition with her performance of ‘Price Tag’, she and Sven headed off on a ‘duet-date’ to learn ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way’ before returning later in the show to perform that number in the ultimate romantic love battle.
“It was a surreal experience,” said Lucy, who often performs at several local venues in and around Newbury. “I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I’m always encouraging my students to put themselves forward and experience new challenges, so why not lead by example.”
Sworn to secrecy, Lucy had to remain tight-lipped about her performance until the show aired, but that didn’t dampen the excitement at the College, as colleagues and students tuned in for her highly anticipated appearance.
When she isn’t singing, Lucy manages the Community Learning provision at Newbury College, which includes a range of part-time programmes for adults, from basic computer skills and confidence building to ballroom dancing and modern languages. She also teaches English as a foreign language to many of West Berkshire’s non-native communities.
Lucy’s performance on Romeo and Duet (Episode 4) is available on the ITV Hub. More information about English and Community Learning programmes is available at newbury-college.ac.uk/adults
