Students outside the Design Museum

Students from Newbury College’s Art and Design programmes recently visited The World of Tim Burton exhibition at the Design Museum in London, where they explored the creative genius of one of the world’s most renowned filmmakers and artists.

The trip brought together students from different levels of the programme, along with those studying Media. With many avid Tim Burton fans among the group, they were excited to discover his unique artistic vision through original sketches, character designs, costumes, and artefacts from iconic films such as Edward Scissorhands and Frankweenie.

Evie Goodrick-Meech, a Level 3 Foundation Diploma student, shared her enthusiasm:

"Tim Burton is a massive inspiration for my style and art. Visiting this exhibition gave me the chance to see his drawings and characterisations. It was interesting to learn about his career, his life and his influences as well as technical aspects in his animations and films.”

The exhibition was a source of inspiration for students as they approached the conclusion of their current coursework brief, “Smile”. The visit provided an opportunity to connect Burton’s innovative techniques to their own projects, sparking new ideas and approaches.

Staff members who accompanied the group also enjoyed the outing, taking the opportunity to be nostalgic and explore the Design Museum’s permanent collection. This included exhibitions on the evolution of technology and significant design movements such as the telephone and computers.

Looking ahead

This trip marks the beginning of more planned visits as beyond its educational value, the trip also offered a break from the normal classroom routine, encouraging collaboration and interaction across different courses and year groups.
