Music Technology students at Newbury College have been getting into the Halloween spirit by composing original horror-themed soundtracks, now available for the public to enjoy online.

As part of their first term of study in the 2025/26 academic year, students were challenged to create atmospheric audio pieces using industry-standard digital tools. The task helped them develop essential technical and creative skills early in their course.

The project followed an inspiring guest visit from WaterBear, The College of Music, based in Brighton. The session gave students a valuable insight into the wide range of careers available in the music industry, from performance to production, and how technology continues to shape modern music-making.

The resulting student work has now been published to the College’s SoundCloud channel, giving listeners a glimpse into the eerie and imaginative soundscapes created in the classroom.

Matt Foster, Course Leader for Music Technology, said:

“This project has been a brilliant way for students to explore storytelling through sound. They have been developing technical skills in creativity, critical thinking, digital production, and collaboration - skills that are essential in music, and across the creative industries.”

Newbury College is proud to focus on careers, not courses. Projects like this help students understand the commercial potential of their work and build real-world skills for future employment in music, media and digital production.
