Invited guests enjoy the private viewing

Art and Design students at Newbury College brought creativity, colour and career aspiration to life at their 2025 end of year show, unveiling an inspiring body of work that marked the culmination of their studies to date.

The exhibition featured a diverse array of projects from students on the Level 2, 3 and 4 Art and Design programmes, celebrating a year of growth, exploration and achievement. From intricate illustrations and professionally produced paintings to proudly presented portfolios, the showcase reflected the students’ developing talents and the high standards they’ve achieved.

Visitors were treated to an impressive variety of work, including large-scale paintings, digital art, branding projects and mixed-media installations — demonstrating the breadth of creative disciplines covered in the curriculum. Many pieces tackled themes such as identity, social change and sustainability, highlighting the students’ ability to apply critical thinking to both personal and collaborative work.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Newbury, Councillor David Harman and Mrs Rosalind Harman, attended a private viewing of the exhibition on the evening of Monday 23 June, alongside college governors, college leaders, and friends and family of the students.

One of the standout pieces came from student Evie Ortiz. Her project, Belief, explored the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Using a glue spreader and a single brush, she created texture and depth in her oil painting, depicting Christ ascending into Heaven. Reflecting on the exhibition, Evie said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Newbury College and have learned so much that I will take with me into the next part of my life. Having my work exhibited is an amazing opportunity to show people what I can do, and to inspire others to show what they can do too.”

Course Leader Alison Harris praised the show as a testament to the students’ creativity and dedication:

“This exhibition is more than a display; it’s a celebration of the determination and imagination our students have shown throughout the year. Their work is thoughtful, original and full of energy. I am immensely proud of what they’ve achieved.”

Throughout the academic year, students built their portfolios through a combination of structured teaching and practical experience. They responded to live design briefs set by industry professionals, gaining real-world insights and valuable career advice. Guest speakers, including Vincent Larken from Bournemouth University, offered additional inspiration. A visit to leading London galleries, such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Design Museum and the Hunterian Museum, sparked new ideas and introduced professional techniques that directly influenced their final work.

Newbury College’s Art and Design programmes are designed to prepare students not only for further study, but for a wide range of creative careers. By combining practical learning with real-world experiences, the College empowers students to discover their potential and take confident steps towards their futures.
