A new “Pump Pod” learning facility has been unveiled at Newbury College, thanks to an innovative partnership with Aldermaston-based Pump Technology Ltd. This hands-on training area aims to give students real-world skills and a head start in the built environment sector.

The Pod, a 3x3 metre unit installed on the College’s Monk’s Lane campus, features a wrap-around bench and commercial-grade pumping systems. Students can practise assembling, disassembling, and operating pumps, gaining practical experience that employers value.

Mike Mullen, Programme Leader for Construction and Building Technology, said: “We want students to develop a proper feel for the tools and technologies they will encounter in the workplace. Practical experience is crucial, especially with the pace of change in our sector. Partnering with Pump Technology on this facility is a strong step forward in combining education with industry.”

The story behind the partnership is equally inspiring. Brayden Hall, who studied Construction and Building Technology at Newbury College, now works full-time at Pump Technology. Brayden gained early insight into the industry by working in the warehouse alongside his father, Daryl Hall, the company’s Services Manager. His progression from student to employee is a clear example of the College’s commitment to preparing students for careers.

Daryl Hall added: “It is not just about pumps and pipes – it is about creating opportunities. We need more young people in the pump and wastewater industry, and we are proud to invest in their future. This partnership shows how local businesses can support the next generation and secure the skills we need.”

The Pump Pod will support training across plumbing, mechanical, and electrical disciplines, helping students to build the confidence and technical understanding needed for success in the workplace.

The practical installation is a powerful example of how local partnerships can support student development and meet industry needs. Newbury College and University Centre Newbury are proud to work with employers who share our commitment to practical, career-focused education. If your business is interested in supporting the next generation of skilled professionals, we would love to hear from you.
