Ash Appella from Primo Engineering speaking with students on the Engineering (Machining) Level 2 programme

Newbury College welcomed Ash Appella from Primo Engineering to speak with students on the Engineering (Machining) Level 2 programme on 15 April 2026, giving learners the opportunity to hear directly from a local engineering business working at the cutting edge of transmission design and development.

Ash, Co-Founder and Director of Primo Engineering, spoke to students about the company’s work in high-performance transmission systems and the fast-moving nature of modern engineering. Based in the Newbury area, Primo Engineering supports customers across motorsport and performance vehicle applications, drawing on experience in areas including Formula 1, Formula E, MotoGP and WRC.

A key focus of the session was innovation, and the importance of developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours in this rapidly advancing industry. Students heard how Primo Engineering has built a comprehensive network of select UK and European-based manufacturers and technology experts, enabling the business to deliver flexible manufacturing solutions at niche volumes. Ash also highlighted the company’s cutting-edge services, including high-quality concept digital renders, 3D assembly models, simulation, verification and testing support.

The Level 2 course is designed to help students build essential practical skills in precision machining and prepare for progression into the engineering industry, including apprenticeships and wider manufacturing careers.

The visit formed part of this “Careers, not courses” curriculum, which connects students with employers and gives them meaningful insight into the realities of industry. Primo Engineering also provides valuable work experience opportunities, helping learners understand how their classroom knowledge can translate into successful careers in engineering.

Matt Jones, Course Leader for Engineering, said:

“It was a real privilege to welcome Ash to Newbury College and give our Level 2 Engineering students the chance to hear from someone working at the forefront of the industry. His talk brought to life the pace of innovation in engineering and showed our students how important it is to develop not only technical ability, but also the mindset and professionalism needed to succeed. Partnerships like this are central to our Careers, not courses approach and help students see the exciting opportunities available right on their doorstep.”

During the session, students also gained a clearer understanding of the breadth of opportunity within engineering, from concept generation and digital design through to manufacturing, testing and product development. By hearing first-hand from a local specialist business, learners were able to see how the skills they are developing at college can support progression into a wide range of exciting and highly technical roles.

Ash Appella said:

“At Primo Engineering, we’re committed to developing future talent. Whether it’s work experience, mentoring graduates, or sharing real-world insights, we believe in giving the next generation the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in engineering. Because the future of our industry depends on the engineers we inspire today.”

Newbury College offers a wide range of engineering programmes and apprenticeships designed to support employers and help develop the qualifications of local engineers across multiple disciplines. From machining and manufacturing to electrical engineering and product design, learners can progress through specialist pathways that build practical skills, technical knowledge and career-ready experience. With opportunities to study up to degree level through University Centre Newbury, in partnership with Bournemouth University, these routes play an important role in strengthening the local talent pipeline and meeting the evolving needs of industry.
