This course is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in science related subjects, wishing to progress to University. This is an intensive course covering: Human Physiology, Chemistry and Psychology. Alongside these core subjects, study techniques and academic writing units are also covered providing you with insight into the world of academia. Emphasis is placed on reading, researching, note taking, and writing for academia, particularly using appropriate resources and referencing using the Harvard referencing system. The course is aimed at adult learners who currently lack the qualifications to move on to studying at university. Whilst working in the healthcare sector is desirable, recommendations may be given at interview.

  • Description

    The course is delivered one day a week, is modular and delivered through a combination of taught sessions, lectures, research and independent study. With the potential for blended learning, a mixture of online and digitally prepared lessons.

  • Entry Requirements

    Students must preferably have GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C and above.

  • Qualification

    Access to Higher Education Science Diploma

  • Progression

    Students may progress onto a degree course in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Microbiology and Health Sciences. The course will also support overall employability skills.

  • Assessment

    Assessment is through assignments and course work, as well as completing two externally set exams for biology and social issues in health care taken in the summer term. Additional assessment is completed through graded and non-graded assignments which are subject to the quality assurance process.

  • Home Study

    All students will be expected to complete a minimum of five to seven hours per week self study and additional reading/assignment work.

  • Work Placement

    None required.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    Students will need to pay the exam entry fee of £190.00.

Fee information

14 - 18 year olds

In most cases students aged 14-18 years old on a substantial study programme will NOT be required to pay fees and most course-specific equipment and materials will be funded by the College. This excludes stationary, non-curriculum trips and a £15 enrichment fee.

19 years and over
