Cyberattack simulation taking place today

This is a planned exercise. It is not a real cyberattack.

What is happening today?

For 24 hours, the college is operating as though our IT systems and telephones are unavailable. Cyberattacks are a real risk for schools, colleges, universities and workplaces. A serious incident could disrupt online services with little or no warning. This simulation helps the college test its emergency plans in a safe and realistic way. It also gives students valuable experience of how organisations respond when technology is disrupted. The exercise supports important employability skills, including adaptability, problem-solving, communication, and resilience.

This means staff and students may not be able to use college computers, college email, OneDrive, internal phone extensions or online systems that depend on the college network. Lessons and support services are continuing using offline plans, printed resources, practical activities, discussions, group work and other planned learning. Students are not being left to manage this alone. Staff are available throughout the day to guide, reassure and support them.

  • Go to their usual lesson, workshop or agreed meeting point
  • Follow instructions from teachers, support staff and reception
  • Speak to a member of staff immediately if they feel worried, unsafe or unsure
  • Use their own mobile phone only in line with normal college expectations

Safeguarding, first aid, supervision and support arrangements remain in place. Staff are on site and available to support students throughout the day.

Students can use their own mobile phones, subject to normal expectations for phone use during lessons. Mobile data, text messages and apps such as WhatsApp should continue to work where students have access through their own device and mobile provider.

Message from Lee Probert, Principal and Chief Executive:

As we approach the New Year, we’re reviewing our campus safety arrangements and it’s important you know what to expect when you come back in January 2025.

From January 2025, all staff and students will be expected to follow our updated Visible Identification (ID) policy.  This means that everyone will have to clearly display their staff or student ID card at all times when on the campus, including in lessons (unless there’s a health and safety reason not to).  This is an update to our current practice and will be followed by everyone – even if you are a member of staff or a student who wears a uniform.

For many people, this will simply mean wearing your lanyard with your ID visible.  Alternatively, you can ask us for a clip and choose to wear it in a different way.

If you have lost your ID card, there will be time for you to ask for a new card and lanyard or clip.  Please go to the Student Hub to get these.

From 9 January 2025, we’re going to start checking this on arrival to learning.  Your tutors will also ask you to display your ID in lessons and this will help to ensure you are displaying when you leave lessons and move around.

From Monday 13 January 2025, you will only be able to enter the building through the main entrance, which will ensure we can meet and greet all staff, students and visitors and of course ensure that IDs are clearly displayed.  This means you will not be able to get in via the rear doors of The Street.

We look forward to seeing you in the New Year and to your support with this important policy update.

My very best wishes to you and your families for the festive period.
