Description
Throughout this programme, tailored for learners aged 16-19 who are enthusiastic working in the motor vehicle industry, you will dive into the basics of automotive systems and learn essential skills needed in the industry. You will have the chance to work on real tasks that will make you feel comfortable handling tools and vehicle components.
The units cover a wide range of topics providing a comprehensive introduction to automotive maintenance and repair. They are likely to include:
- Introduction to Health and Safety in the Workplace
- Introduction to Common Tools and Equipment for Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- Introduction to Engine Components and Operation
- Introduction to Lubrication System Components and Maintenance
- Introduction to Engine Cooling System Components and Maintenance, among others

Entry Requirements
You will need at least a GCSE Grade 1 in mathematics and English. Alongside your Motor Vehicle programme you will continue to study mathematics and English until you have achieved a Grade 4.
If you are 16-19 with a keen interest in automotive maintenance and repair but need to continue to study English and mathematics, this is the perfect starting point into the automotive industry. A skills assessment will be carried out prior to enrolment.

Qualification
You will work towards one of three qualifications (pathways) based on the level that you and your tutor identify as most suited to your abilities. The qualification gained will depend on the number of units taken:

Progression
After completing this programme, you will be well-prepared to move on to the next level of automotive study, such as the Level 1 Motor Vehicle programme. You could also consider entry-level roles in a garage or dealership, where you can further develop your skills through on-the-job training.

Assessment
You will be assessed through practical tasks and coursework that reflects the hands-on nature of the programme. This could include vehicle checks, servicing tasks, and written assignments to demonstrate your knowledge of vehicle systems. Assessments are designed to ensure you are developing both the practical and theoretical skills needed for the next stage of your journey in automotive maintenance. You will also undertake an online Health and Safety exam.

Home Study
You can expect to complete 2 - 3 hours of written tasks and research assignments to support your practical work. These tasks will help you consolidate what you have learned in the workshop, ensuring you have a strong understanding of the theoretical aspects of vehicle maintenance. This homework will not only reinforce your learning but also prepare you for your assessments.

Work Placement
There is no set work placement for this level however you may have the opportunity engage with inspiring speakers from the industry who will share insights about their roles and career paths. There may also be a chance to participate in an external motor vehicle related visit.

Fees and Additional Costs
If you are over 18 there will be a registration fee of £75.00 if you have not previously registered with the exam board. You will need to supply your own overalls and boots, pens, paper and ruler etc. There are also technical books required for the course. You are encouraged to purchase your own tools for use within the workshop. Funding for the course is age dependant.
