  • Description

    The programme typically takes three years or more to complete and is delivered through a combination of academic study and workplace-based learning. You will study modules that cover:

    • Electrical circuit theory
    • Electronic components and their applications
    • Analogue and digital design techniques
    • Structured software design
    • Circuit design and layout using CAD tools
    • Embedded software development
    • Systems integration and testing

    You will also develop an understanding of your employer's business and product applications.

    You will engage in live, work-based projects with real-world impact, supported by a curriculum aligned to the Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Engineer degree apprenticeship standard (ST0151).

  • Entry Requirements

    Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England and have no upper age limit. Any vacancies will clearly state what the entry requirements are for the job role being advertised. There will be different entry requirements depending on the company and role.

    You should have:

    • A minimum of three A-levels at grade C or above, including Mathematics and a science subject
    • Alternatively, a relevant Level 3 apprenticeship or equivalent qualification
    • GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above in English and Mathematics

    You will have a keen interest in engineering and engineering activities, as well as a reasonable level of competency in mathematics and science. You should be familiar with basic computer functions and applications including Microsoft Windows and Office. Parts of your programme will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. Training for this application will be provided.

    To succeed in this programme, you should possess:

  • Qualification

  • Progression

    Successful completion of this apprenticeship can give you several routes for progression in industry, including the Level 7 Postgraduate Engineer Apprenticeship.

  • Assessment

    Your progress will be assessed through:

    • Written assignments and reports
    • Practical projects and presentations
    • End-point assessment, including a project and professional discussion

    Individuals without Level 2 English and mathematics will need to achieve this level but can study this alongside their programme. You will need to achieve this prior to taking the end-point assessment.

    The Higher National elements and the degree element will be assessed through a combination of assignments, work-based assessments, case studies, team projects, live projects and exams.

  • Home Study

    You will be expected to complete independent study each week, including:

    • Reading and research
    • Completing assignments and projects
    • Preparing for assessments

    Access to a computer and internet connection is required.

  • Work Placement

    As an apprentice, you will gain practical experience through your employment, applying your learning to real-world projects and challenges in your workplace.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    If you are between the ages of 16 and 24, you will not have to fund your own tuition, it is your employer and the government who cover the fees. If you are over 25, you may be asked to contribute towards the cost of your training, but it depends on your employer. If you do have to contribute to the cost of training, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan.

    The cost of training an apprentice is dependent on their age and whether or not the business pays the Apprenticeship Levy. There are a range of different grants and incentives available to employers. Contact us for up-to-date information and advice on the funding support available.

    You will be required to contribute £15 to the College Subscription Fund. Additional costs may include:

    • Textbooks and learning materials
    • Travel expenses for attending workshops or placements
