Do you want to become a Carpenter? Site Carpentry is aimed at you if you want to work in the construction industry, specifically as a site carpenter. A site carpenter has the skills and knowledge to cut, fasten, carve and design objects made of wood or other materials and is an important part of any construction team. You will gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge that are important when you are working as a site carpenter or progressing to further learning and training in this area.


  • Description

    You'll learn the main skills and knowledge you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work as a site carpenter.

    You will study:

    • Principles of construction
    • Structural carpentry
    • Non-structural carpentry before plastering
    • Non-structural carpentry following plastering
    • Timber technology and the use of a circular saw
  • Entry Requirements

    You don't need any previous experience. You will have an interest in carpentry, a Level 1 or equivalent Carpentry qualification or at least GSCE grade 4 in English and maths.

    Good hand-eye coordination is desirable along with an interest in developing skills and designing objects with wood.

    City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Site Carpentry

  • Progression

    Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the necessary technical skills and knowledge they are looking for when recruiting for a site carpenter. We work with local employers who support apprentices at Level 3. This could be working for a house-building company, a property development company, or working as part of a small business repairing and refurbishing buildings.

  • Assessment

    Your progress will be assessed through a combination of practical tasks, projects, and coursework. These will demonstrate your ability to complete essential tasks in Site Carpentry. You will receive feedback to help you improve and succeed.

  • Home Study

    You will be expected to complete some homework to reinforce what you learn during practical sessions. This might involve research, written tasks, or planning for practical projects, all aimed at deepening your understanding and preparing you for the next step in your construction career

  • Work Placement

    You may have the chance to participate in work experience where you can gain hands-on experience. You will also engage with inspiring speakers from the industry who will share insights about their roles and career paths. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to visit various workplaces to observe professionals in action.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    You may be required to purchase workwear such as safety boots and trousers. Prices will be discussed prior to enrolment.
