Foundation Degree in Children's Development and Learning

  • Description

    Throughout the programme, you'll cover key topics that will help you understand the essentials of child care. You'll explore:

    • Child development and the stages of growth
    • Healthy living and nutrition for young children
    • Supporting children's play and learning
    • Safeguarding children and understanding child protection
    • Communication skills in a child care setting
    • Preparing for employment in the childcare sector

    This programme provides a mix of theory and practical experience, giving you a broad understanding of what it takes to support and care for young children.

    Students are required to wear uniform when on work placement and the process for collecting this uniform will be explained at induction. We encourage student feedback and good attendance at review evenings.

  • Entry Requirements

    Four GCSE passes at grade 2 or above, preferably to include Maths and English, or a vocational qualification at pass or above, and Functional Skills Maths and English preferably at Entry Level 3.

    You need a genuine interest in working with children. A positive attitude, good communication skills, and patience will be beneficial as you learn to care for children in different environments.

  • Qualification

    Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children

  • Progression

    After completing this Level 1 diploma, you'll be ready to take the next step onto a Level 2 Child Care or Early Years Practitioner programme or look for apprenticeships, such as a nursery or playgroup assistant.

  • Assessment

    You'll be assessed through a combination of written assignments, practical activities, and observations. These assessments are designed to help you demonstrate your understanding and application of the skills and knowledge gained during the programme.

  • Home Study

    A minimum of two hours per week as appropriate.

  • Work Placement

    You'll have the chance to participate in work experience where you can gain hands-on experience. Engage with inspiring speakers from the industry who will share insights about their roles and career paths. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to visit various workplaces to observe professionals in action.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    If you are over 18 there will be a registration fee of £130.00 if you have not previously registered with the exam board. For your work placement you will need to purchase a college logo polo shirt and sweatshirt at a cost of approximately £30.00.
