Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, successfully promote and retail products, provide a range of beauty treatments including Swedish massage, skin and body analysis and electrical science in order to make informed decisions for face and body electrical treatments. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

Beauty Therapy

  • Description

    This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

    • Health and safety in the salon
    • Client care and consultation
    • Body analysis
    • Skin analysis
    • Swedish massage therapy
    • Body electrical treatment
    • Facial electrical treatment
    • Electrical science
    • Mechanical massage
    • Anatomy and physiology for the face and body systems

    The recommended textbooks are: Beauty Therapy Level 3 5th Edition by Lorraine Nordmann Anatomy and Physiology 5th Edition by Helen McGuinness

  • Entry Requirements

    Any student applying for the course must hold a current full level 2 qualification in Beauty Therapy with current skills and all treatments carried out in a professional environment. Students must also have five GCSE passes at grade 4 (D) or above, preferably including Maths and English or an equivalent vocational qualification at merit grade, and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Level 2. Students must also be in relevant work-related employment.

    Level 2 beauty or sufficient commercial experience is essential. It is an advantage to be comfortable working on the computer as all exams are online and all assignments.

  • Progression

    As a massage therapist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include: commercial salons destination/day spas massage clinics independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings cruise liners airlines or hotel chains care homes

    Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 4 in one or more of the following areas:

    • salon management
    • holistic therapies
    • sports massage
  • Assessment

    Continuous assessment of practical skills will prepare students for graded assessments which are set throughout the year. A graded end-of-year practical synoptic exam and written exams are required to pass the qualification, an overall grade will then be awarded which will be a pass, merit or distinction.

  • Home Study

    Four to six hours a week is recommended to support the qualification. This will included revision for exams.

  • Work Placement

    It is mandatory that a substantial amount of work experience is gained along side this course. Ideally, working part-time in the industry would benefit skills and knowledge.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    A uniform is mandatory. It is also recommended that students purchase their own text book
