Description
This engaging and motivating programme is generally aimed at young people who wish to continue with their studies in the automotive sector. You will gain key knowledge and skills in a mainly practical setting which will help you prepare for an apprenticeship or career development.
You will learn all about the core aspects of maintaining and repairing light vehicles through both hands-on workshops and classroom learning. This programme covers:

- Routine vehicle maintenance and inspection techniques
- Electrical systems diagnostics and repairs
- Steering, suspension, and braking systems
- Using automotive tools and equipment safely

Entry Requirements
You will need GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above for mathematics and English, or a Level 1 Motor Vehicle qualification and GCSE Grade 3 or above in mathematics & English. Students who have not yet achieved a Grade 4 in mathematics and English will continue to study these GCSEs alongside their main programme.
A good level of academic and study skills is required to undertake this course, problem solving and the willingness to learn and participate in lessons are a necessity. You do not need to be working in the industry, but a part-time course related job would be an advantage.

Progression
Upon completing this programme, you will be ready to take on an entry-level role in the automotive sector, such as a vehicle technician or mechanic. Many students go on to pursue further qualification via an apprenticeship with a local garage, dealership, or specialist workshop. You can also progress to the IMI Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles.

Assessment
You will be assessed through a combination of practical tasks and hands-on assessments. These assessments are designed to ensure that you understand the theoretical knowledge while also demonstrating your practical abilities in the workshop. Portfolio work in the form of practical write ups are set on Microsoft Teams and have an agreed submission date. You will also need to pass a number of subject specific online examinations.

Home Study
While most of the learning will take place in a practical workshop setting, some assignments and revision will need to be completed at home. You may be required to research topics covered in class, review workshop notes, and prepare for assessments. You are expected to allocate approximately 2 - 3 hours per a week on homework outside of normal class time.

Work Placement
You will have the opportunity to participate in work experience where you can gain hands-on experience. You will also engage with inspiring speakers from the industry who will share insights about their roles and career paths. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to visit various workplaces to observe professionals in action.

Fees and Additional Costs
You will need to supply your own overalls and boots, pens, paper and ruler etc. There are also technical books required for the course. You are encouraged to purchase your own tools for use within the workshop. Funding for the course is age dependant.
