Portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II

Following the sad news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we understand that this will impact students and staff across the College in different ways.

During the period of national mourning, a number of College arrangements have been agreed to commemorate her life. These will include:

  • Thursday 15 September
Students and staff are invited to attend an event at 14:00 to commemorate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The event will take place near the memorial garden on the west side of the main building and will include the laying of flowers on behalf of all of the departments of the College. Dawn Butcher (Student Support and Enrichment Co-ordinator) will coordinate the event. A two-minute silence will be observed across the campus at 14:15. After the commemoration event, students and staff are able to hang a message of condolence on the trees in the memorial garden.

  • Monday 19 September
The day of Her Majesty’s funeral has been confirmed as a national bank holiday, and all schools and colleges will close on that day. The College will be closed across all locations, and no work will be set for students so that all members of the College community can utilise the day for its intended purpose. The College will continue to operate as normal on all other days, and any exams will continue as planned.

  • Floral tributes
In addition to the floral tributes at the College Commemoration Event, students and staff wishing to leave flowers may do so locally at Newbury Town Hall in Market Place. In our region, Flowers can also be laid in Windsor, on the Long Walk at Cambridge Gate.

  • Books of Condolence
Students and staff wishing to write a message of condolence can do so by using the National online Book of Condolence. A selection of messages will be passed on to members of the Royal Family and may be held in the Royal Archives for posterity. Books of Condolence are also being provided by West Berkshire Council at the following locations:
    • Council Offices, Market Street, Newbury
    • Shaw House, Church Road, Newbury
    • Hungerford Library
    • Thatcham Library
    • Theale Library
    • Mobile Library
    • Newbury Town Council

  • Social media and external communications
Messages have been posted on the College website, Student Hub, Staff Hub and computer desktops. All marketing activity has ceased during the period of national mourning.
