Your safety is very important to us. Newbury College and University Centre Newbury are real working environments, with classrooms, workshops and specialist areas that may contain hazards. Staff will explain any area-specific risks, but all students and visitors should follow the emergency procedures below at all times.
General Safety Rules
To help keep everyone safe on campus:
- Food and drink are generally not permitted in classrooms or workshops.
- Water may be allowed if it is in a resealable bottle.
- Keep work areas tidy and free from anything that could cause a hazard.
- Make sure your workstation is comfortable and set up safely.
- Do not plug personal devices into main power sockets.
- Smoking is not permitted anywhere on campus except in designated smoking areas.
- This includes e-cigarettes and vapes.
- Follow all safety signs, avoid unsafe actions, and report any hazards.
Accidents and First Aid
All accidents, however minor, must be reported immediately to your tutor, teacher, manager or another member of staff.
Most departments have a qualified emergency first aider who can deal with minor injuries.
- If you need a First Aider, contact Reception or call 01635 845000.
- For a medical emergency, call 999.
Fire Procedure
If you discover a fire
- Sound the nearest fire alarm immediately.
- Warn others in the area.
- Do not attempt to tackle the fire until the alarm has been raised.
If you hear the fire alarm
- Leave the building calmly by the nearest or safest route.
- Close windows and doors if appropriate and safe to do so.
- Do not stop to collect belongings or personal items.
- Do not use the lifts.
- Do not use your mobile phone or put on your coat until you are outside.
- Go directly to the assembly point in the main car park.
- Report to your tutor or a member of staff so they know you are safe.
- Do not leave the college campus without permission.
- Do not re-enter the building until the all clear is given.
If you cannot evacuate
- If you are unable to leave the building, wait in a refuge area at the top of a stairwell and alert a member of staff.
- If you are trapped, unable to evacuate, or unable to alert a member of staff, call 999 or shout for help.
Lockdown Procedure
In the unlikely event of an intruder or threat on campus, the lockdown procedure will be put in place.
RUN
If it is safe to leave the area, escape immediately using the safest available route.
HIDE
If you cannot escape:
- Lock or block access points.
- Move furniture to obstruct doorways.
- Sit on the floor under tables or against a wall.
- Stay out of sight.
- Draw curtains or blinds.
- Turn off lights.
- Stay away from doors and windows.
- Switch mobile phones to silent, not vibrate.
TELL
When it is safe to do so, call 999 and ask for the police, giving your location.
If you are with a member of staff, they will take the lead.
