How are these courses free?

These courses are designed to support adult learners across England and are funded through the Adult Skills Fund (ASF), by the Department for Education (DfE). Each programme includes the main qualification and a short, additional workbook.

Eligibility

To be eligible for free courses under the ASF, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be 19 or older on 31 August of the academic year in which your course starts.
  • Meet the entry requirements for the course.
  • You must be ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of learning.
  • Your home postcode must fall within an area that is covered by ASF funding.

Funding is determined by your home postcode at the time you start your course. This postcode is matched against a national database to identify whether your area is.

Unfortunately, we are unable to fund learners who live in the following devolved authority areas:

  • Greater London Authority
  • Greater Manchester Combined Authority
  • West Midlands Combined Authority
  • Liverpool City Region Combined Authority
  • West Yorkshire Combined Authority
  • South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority
  • North East Mayoral Combined Authority
  • West of England Combined Authority
  • Cambridge and Peterborough Combined Authority
  • Tees Valley Combined Authority
  • East Midlands Combined County Authority
  • York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority
  • Cornwall Council

We want everyone to succeed. If you’re unable to complete your programme within the agreed timeframe, please be aware that additional fees may apply. There may also be extra charges for work-based assessment visits or other specific costs. You will be informed of any additional fees before you enrol.

To help you get the most from your learning experience, you can enrol in one Study Online course at a time. Once you’ve completed your programme, we encourage you to progress to the next level or explore a new subject to continue your learning journey.
