Sport (Sports Coaching) Level 2
Turn your interest in sport into practical skills for your next step. This programme introduces you to sports coaching, performance and tactical development while building the confidence, teamwork and leadership skills needed to progress to Level 3 study, an apprenticeship or a career in the sport and fitness industry.

Description
Learn through a combination of practical sport, coaching activities and classroom-based study.
You will develop your understanding of how athletes improve their performance and how coaches plan and deliver effective activities. Practical sessions will give you opportunities to participate, lead others and apply the knowledge developed in the classroom.
You will explore:

- Tactical awareness
- Planning and delivering sporting activities
- Reviewing performance
- Working effectively as part of a team
Alongside your sports knowledge, you will develop transferable skills such as:

Guest speakers and visits to professional sport and fitness environments may also help you see how these skills are used in the workplace.

Entry requirements
You will normally need:
- Five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and Maths
- Or an appropriate Level 1 vocational qualification, together with equivalent English and Maths qualifications
If you have not yet achieved grade 4 in GCSE English and/or Maths, you will continue to study these alongside your main programme.
You will get the most from this programme if you:

- Want to develop your coaching and leadership skills
- Are willing to communicate with and support other people
- Can organise your work and meet deadlines

You do not need previous coaching experience. You will develop these skills throughout the programme.

Progression
The most common next step is Sport and Physical Activity Level 3 at Newbury College, where you can develop more advanced knowledge of coaching, fitness, performance and the sport industry.
Depending on your sporting interests and ability, other possible routes may include:
- Sport and Physical Activity Level 3 at Newbury College
- Uniformed Public Services Level 3 at Newbury College
- Football Academy Level 3, if you meet the academic and playing requirements
- Golf Academy Level 3, if you meet the academic and playing requirements
- A sports coaching apprenticeship
- A fitness or leisure apprenticeship
- Further training in coaching or physical activity
- Employment or volunteering within community sport
With further study and experience, you could progress towards careers in sports coaching, fitness, leisure, community sport, sports development or other areas of the sport industry.

Assessment
The qualification is assessed entirely through coursework and practical assessment.
Assessment may include:
- Practical sports activities
- Coaching activities
- Written assignments
- Projects
- Presentations
- Applying sports theory to practical situations
Your tutors will provide feedback throughout the programme to help you develop your sporting knowledge, practical ability and confidence.
There are no formal written examinations within the vocational qualification.
English and Maths, where studied alongside your programme, are assessed separately and may include exams.

Home study
You should expect to complete around 3 to 4 hours of independent study each week.
This may include:
- Researching sport and coaching topics
- Completing written assignments
- Planning practical activities
- Reviewing sporting performance
- Preparing presentations
- Completing assessment evidence
- Responding to tutor feedback
Regular independent study will help you develop the organisation and study skills required for progression to Level 3.

Work placement
There is no formal work experience requirement for this qualification, but you will have opportunities to explore how sport professionals work.
Depending on the opportunities available during your programme, you may:
- Meet coaches and other industry professionals
- Hear from guest speakers about different careers
- Visit professional sport or fitness environments
- Take part in employer-led activities
- Explore coaching and volunteering opportunities
These experiences will help you connect what you learn in College with the different careers available in sport and physical activity.

Fees and additional costs
- All full-time students are asked to contribute £15 towards the College Subscription Fund
- You will need to purchase the required Sports Programme uniform
- Details and costs for the uniform will be provided before enrolment
- Optional trips, visits, sporting activities or events may have additional travel or entry costs, and you will be given information in advance
