HNC Sports and Exercise Science (Coaching Science) enables a multidisciplinary study of sport and exercise science at a higher level. In this blended course, you will have the opportunity to study all the major disciplines of sports science and coaching science. You will gain a scientific understanding of core principles involved in increasing an athlete's performance with a wide range of modules, as well as the ability to coach to a high level. Practical aspects will run alongside the scientific elements to ensure that you are able to increase your skills and knowledge. The qualification is studied full time over one year. The course is delivered through a blended learning approach, meaning teaching and learning will occur both on site in classrooms and remotely via a virtual learning environment.

    After successfully completing the Higher National Certificate, you will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of Sport and Exercise Science. You will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately, and you will have the qualities needed for employment that requires personal responsibility. You will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, independent initiatives, organisational competence and problem-solving strategies. You will be adaptable and flexible, show resilience under pressure, and meet challenging targets within a given resource.

    This course operates using a blended learning approach, where part, orall ofsome units may be delivered online, via Microsoft Teams. To participate in this programme, you will need a suitable computer and/or device with sufficient internet access. Specific requirements and information on the support available to borrow or purchase equipment can be discussed at interview.

  • Entry Requirements

    A Level 3 qualification,or similar, is required.

    A typical offer would be BCC at A-Level or DMM at BTEC. Applications are welcome from students with a range of non-traditional educational or professional qualifications. We also welcome mature students and students who have undertaken Access courses.

    As a minimum: 3 GCSE's Grade A-C / 9-4 or Level 2 equivalent to include Mathematics and English Language.

    If English is not your first language, a minimum IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) is required.

    You will require the ability to work independently in self-directed study as well as theresearch skill.You should be familiar with basic computer functions and applications including Microsoft Windows and Office. Parts of your programme will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. Training for this application will be provided.

  • Qualification

    Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate in Sport and Exercise Science (Coaching Science)

  • Progression

    Students who successfully complete this qualification can enter employment, continue existing employment, study a relevant course at Level 5 or commit to continuing professional development (CPD).

  • Assessment

    You will be assessed continually throughout the course, normally via written assignments, observations, presentations and reflective logbooks.

  • Home Study

    You are expected to work independently and proactively to prepare for class and undertake written assignments in your own time, allocating approximately four hours a week on research and self-study outside of normal class time in order to build up knowledge and confidence and successfully complete the programme.

  • Work Placement

    The course does not involve work placement, but you are encouraged to seek out opportunities to visit or engage with companies within the industry.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    The tuition fees for this programme are currently subject to consultation. In addition to the tuition fee, an awarding body registration fee (set by the awarding body) and an annual student subscription fee of £15 are payable. At times, you may be offered the opportunity to visit exhibitions and shows, which may require additional entrance fees and travel costs.

    You will be expected to bring appropriate stationery and exercise kit for practical sessions.

Fee information

14 - 18 year olds

In most cases students aged 14-18 years old on a substantial study programme will NOT be required to pay fees and most course-specific equipment and materials will be funded by the College. This excludes stationary, non-curriculum trips and a £15 enrichment fee.

19 years and over

Students aged 19 years and over may be required to pay fees. For details of fee remission and loans for students over the age of 19 click here.
