Product Design & Development Engineers work on all stages of product creation, product modification and product componentry. They support activities ranging on early concept feasibility, Computer Aided Design and other modelling, activities and stages through to final preparation for launch and customers. This includes working in concept studios, rapid prototyping, assembly, testing, validating and analysing performance. They work closely with suppliers and managers in bring new concepts to life or contributing to redesigns of existing products.

  • Description

    You will develop a solid grasp of the core engineering skills. These skills will not only prepare you for the workplace in demonstrating that you have the required manual dexterity to do your core role, but your competencies are transferable and can be built upon over time.?

    You will develop and deepen your general engineering skills in your specialist areas and also may undergo placements in relevant supportive functions to provide breadth of experience. With all of these skills, you will be using a well-planned logical and systematic approach.

    On successful completion of the above, you will then progress to develop your skills in:

    • Project Management in undertaking engineering activities

    • Establishing design briefs, presenting and discussing technical proposals

    • Managing and controlling product design change

    • Supporting team feasibility design reviews.

    • Demonstrating technical and commercial management in planning and managing tasks & resources

    The academic knowledge element of the apprenticeship will develop the fundamental scientific and mathematical principles that equip apprentices with the understanding required to operate effectively and efficiently at high level within this sector. These skills will be further developed on the degree and expand your understanding to a higher level and commence on specialised modules:

    • Design for Manufacture

    • Leadership and Management

    • Work-based Research Project

    The degree element has been accredited by the Institute of Engineering Designers (IED) to IEng level and provides professional recognition for the study undertaken.

    This standard has been designed to meet the professional standards of the Engineering Council for initial registration as an Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Further professional development and registration is subject to candidates successfully completing the appropriate learning, developing the appropriate competence, and undergoing professional review.

    The typical duration of this apprenticeship is 4 to 5 years. This duration may be reduced for a candidate with previous relevant experience and/or someone already part qualified. Alternatively, this may also be a progression route from a relevant Advanced Apprenticeship.

    An apprenticeship is a genuine job and under all circumstances an apprentice will be employed from day one. Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study.

  • Entry Requirements

    Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England and have no upper age limit. Any vacancies will clearly state what the entry requirements are for the job role being advertised. There will be different entry requirements depending on the company and role.

    A minimum 5 GCSE's at grade 4(C) or above, including Mathematics, English and a Science, Technology or Engineering related subject, as well as A Levels at grade 4(C) or above in both a Mathematical based subject and a Science, Technology, Engineering or additional Mathematics related subject, or 90+ credits in an Engineering BTEC at level 3.

    You will have a keen interest in Engineering and Engineering activities, as well as a reasonable level of competency in mathematics and science. You should be familiar with basic computer functions and applications including Microsoft Windows and Office. Parts of your programme will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. Training for this application will be provided.

  • Qualification

    BEng (Hons) in Engineering Design (depending on specialism, either in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering) Buckinghamshire New University

  • Progression

    Successful completion of this apprenticeship can give you several routes for progression in industry, including the Level 7 Postgraduate Engineer Apprenticeship.

  • Assessment

    Through their apprenticeship, apprentices gain the technical knowledge, practical experience and wider skills they need for their job and career. Apprentices will have their skills, knowledge and behaviours evaluated at the end of their apprenticeship by taking an end-point assessment (EPA). This is known as synoptic assessment. Individuals without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 English and maths prior to taking the end-point assessment.

    The Higher National elements and the degree element will be assessed through a combination of assignments, work-based assessments, case studies, team projects, live projects and exams.

  • Home Study

    The apprentice is expected to study through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment. The time spent on off-the-job training should be at least 20% and should be included as part of working hours. The employer must allow time to complete the apprenticeship within the working hours, however, some homework may be set by College Tutors or Development Coaches.

  • Work Placement

    This is a work-based programme and is studied as part of an apprenticeship.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    If you are between the ages of 16 and 24, you will not have to fund your own tuition, it is your employer and the government who cover the fees. If you are over 25, you may be asked to contribute towards the cost of your training, but it depends on your employer. If you do have to contribute to the cost of training, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan.

    The cost of training an apprentice is dependent on their age and whether or not the business pays the Apprenticeship Levy. There are a range of different grants and incentives available to employers. Contact us for up-to-date information and advice on the funding support available.

Fee information

14 - 18 year olds

In most cases students aged 14-18 years old on a substantial study programme will NOT be required to pay fees and most course-specific equipment and materials will be funded by the College. This excludes stationary, non-curriculum trips and a £15 enrichment fee.

19 years and over

Students aged 19 years and over may be required to pay fees. For details of fee remission and loans for students over the age of 19 click here.
