“My company were looking at a course to aid with my next stage in educational development, Newbury college stood out to me from the course selection they gave me as it is a well rated college and the course itself is better suited to my way of learning by being coursework based. The lecturers are always very helpful and their feedback on any assignments are really helpful in where to make improvements now and how to continue that level of detail on other assignments. The course itself it presented in a good way, it is a mixture of classroom teaching and hands on practical.”

“I have studied at Newbury College for nearly two years now and I feel the college is working hard to ensure I obtain the qualifications I need and want. The course covers a wide range of engineering sectors, allowing me to explore different forms of engineering. The teaching staff all have different backgrounds, making the lessons far more interesting and diverse. I would like to progress onto level 4 at the new University Centre.”

  • Description

This work-based programme places an emphasis on critical analysis, problem identification and solving design and technology in the engineering context. We also focus on quality management and the development of the skills required to lead and manage complex engineering projects/systems.

You will be encouraged to study independently; create an innovative technique by investigating materials, technology and processes; and work in groups or partnerships to develop leadership and collaborative working skills.

Throughout the programme, you will develop technical leadership skills in developing new products and services, understand how to improve existing ones and evaluate commercial implications to the business following professional ethics and sustainability.

    Topics covered include:

Project Management and Research Skills (Work-Based Learning) Develop research skills for designing, planning, and conducting an academic or industry-based engineering project. Learn how to use research and data analysis skills to identify solutions to problems. Aspects of engineering ethics, professional codes of practice and professional development audit will also be covered.

Product Development for Business (Work-based) Develop knowledge and understanding of different phases and activities essential to initiate and implement a new engineering system or product successfully. Learn the principles of new product development and the strategic entrepreneurship process within manufacturing and engineering context.

Industrial Group Project (Work-Based Learning) Capitalise on the technical, problem analysis and project management skills learned in earlier modules, by working on a project-based real industrial environment. Develop the essential professional engineering skill of working with others to achieve an engineering output. Where possible, projects are requested from a range of internal or industrial companies.

Contemporary Methods in Engineering Design Understand how the constitutions of materials control their mechanical properties, focusing on in-service deterioration, failure, tools and techniques to facilitate sustainable product design. Gain a deeper understanding of the product design processes that can reduce environmental impacts and promote sustainable practices. Employ key methods in the design of products and systems, covering the use of computer-based methods and systems for modelling engineering products, as well as the human factors such as the role of ergonomists.

You will have the opportunity to take part in exciting educational visits to a range of different industries (subject to health and safety conditions). These will range from automotive to aerospace and will be selected by the interests of the group.

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, this course operates using a blended learning approach, where part, or all of some units may be delivered online, via Microsoft Teams. To participate in this programme you will need a suitable computer and/or device with sufficient internet access. Specific requirements and information on the support available to borrow or purchase equipment can be discussed at interview.

  • Entry Requirements

You will be required to work to a high level in both practical and academic work. We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences, including international applicants with an interest in the engineering industry and their associated departments.

Applications are welcome from those who may not possess formal entry qualifications, mature students, or with qualifications different to those listed. Such applicants should demonstrate their potential to complete the course successfully at interview stage.

International students may be interviewed via video call or may send an electronic portfolio. All international applicants should have English language to IELTS Level 6.

You are expected to have a keen interest in Engineering and Engineering activities, as well as a reasonable level of competency in mathematics and science. You should be familiar with basic computer functions and applications including Microsoft Windows and Office. Parts of your programme will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. Training for this application will be provided.

  • Qualification

MSc. in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or Production Engineering)

  • Progression

Following the successful completion of the Post Graduate Degree, subject to institution approval, you can apply for professional status at Chartered Engineering level with organisations that are expected to include:

    • The Institute of Engineering Designers (IED)
    • Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
    • The Institute of Engineering Technologists (IET).

You then have the option to develop on to research or specialist study, including a PhD programme or further professional development, meeting the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer.

  • Assessment

This is an accredited degree programme and will be reviewed by the IED at periodic intervals.

You will be assessed through a combination of assignments, work-based assessments, case studies, team projects, live projects and exams.

The assessment method is selected as appropriate to each module and based on the requirement of the Engineering Council.

Whilst setting the assessment brief for the research skills part of the module, opportunities will be considered to enable you to collect your own data from the engineering practices.

In addition to portfolio work, some units may also include externally marked assessment material, sat under controlled conditions.

  • Home Study

Homework will be set in class and/or via Microsoft Teams UCNs online virtual learning platform. You are expected to allocate approximately eight hours a week on research and homework outside of normal class time in order to build up knowledge, confidence and successfully complete the programme. This may be completed at home or in the UCN.

  • Work Placement

Work placement is not included on this programme, however, you are expected to be in a working environment. This will allow you to continue to progress your career and to develop high learning skills. The degree will open up the management opportunities for you to develop further in the engineering discipline.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

The tuition fee for this programme is £6,300 per year.

At times, you may be offered the opportunity to visit industries and shows, which may require additional entrance fees and costs. You will also benefit from purchasing a copy of a course-related textbook approximately £100.00 dependent on text. Further details will be discussed during induction. All students will join the IED as student members; this is free. A student association fee of £15 is also payable.
