Ballroom & Latin Dance - Beginners
Discover the essential steps of Ballroom and Latin styles; for students with little or no experience. This course is a great starting point for developing coordination, timing and style for the Strictly look!
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and rules regarding social distancing this course will be taught via blended learning. The course will include both online and face to face teaching sessions. All sessions will be scheduled at the times indicated below.
? The course tutor will provide live teaching sessions online using Microsoft Teams.
? Selected sessions will be available for a small number of students on a rota basis at the college. All face to face sessions will also be streamed online to ensure all learners can fully participate in every session. Your course tutor will arrange with you a rota for coming into the college.
? If you are not attending in person, you will participate in the session from home via Microsoft Teams.
? Learners who are unable to attend face to face sessions can still enrol onto the course and attend all sessions online.
Learners will also be able to access a wide range of College services including Moodle, Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One Drive) and Microsoft Teams to support online learning. Induction sessions will be held prior to the start of the course, to allow learners to familiarise themselves with the online learning platforms.

This course provides the basic steps for the most popular Ballroom and Latin dances. Sample of these dances are: Waltz, Social Foxtrot, Jive, Cha Cha and Rumba.
The focus will be on identifying the differences between Latin and Ballroom, music, stance, poise and becoming comfortable with the different movements. Time will be spent on building up confidence to dance and have an enjoyable experience. Learners will also improve their general level of fitness and muscle tone from the dance class contributes to a healthy lifestyle and improved well-being. The course is flexible to suit the needs of students, providing revision and practice. Individuals, pairs and social dancers are welcome.

- Demonstrate the dance moves taught, comfortably, in time to the music.
*PLEASE NOTE- The running of this course is subject to receiving sufficient enrolment numbers. Newbury College reserve the right to close, cancel or postpone a course if it has not received the minimum required enrolment number by the scheduled start date. In the case of cancellation, enrolled students are notified approximately one week before the start date.
Students will be asked to complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire before the first class. Failure to complete the questionnaire may result in the student not being able to participate in the class. This course does not lead to a formal qualification.
Students can progress onto the Improvers Level 1 course.
Students will be assessed through tutor observation, an individual learning plan and tutor/peer feedback.
Homework is not essential, although students will benefit from practising the steps at home.
Students do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

14 - 18 year olds
In most cases students aged 14-18 years old on a substantial study programme will NOT be required to pay fees and most course-specific equipment and materials will be funded by the College. This excludes stationary, non-curriculum trips and a £15 enrichment fee.
19 years and over
Students aged 19 years and over may be required to pay fees. For details of fee remission and loans for students over the age of 19 click here.
