This Introductory course will introduce you to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) with a focus on:

  1. the structures, resources and processes that together make up an intelligent agent and the application of AI
  2. the techniques, models and tools that can be used to simulate the intelligent processes
  3. the skills and capabilities necessary to critically review AI literature and/or products, to synthesise ideas, to systematically solve AI problems and to communicate effectively with the outside world.

This a FREE (fully-funded) programme for Adults aged 19+. The programme will run once a week for a full day at Newbury College, every Thursday (08:30 - 17:00) from Thursday 8 February 2024 up to and including Thursday 28 March 2024.

You will gain the knowledge and skills required to understand the fundamentals of AI, and how they can be used to solve real world problems more intelligently, and ultimately to build basic intelligent artefacts through simple programming.

Currently, popular approaches include statistical methods, computational intelligence and traditional symbolic AI covering an understanding of both Narrow AI and General AI. There are a large number of tools used in AI, including mathematical optimisation, logic and probability. AI has become an essential part of the technology industry, providing the heavy lifting for many of the most difficult problems in manufacturing and computer science.

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term covering a variety of interrelated, but distinct, subfields. Some of the most common fields you will encounter within the broader field of artificial intelligence include: Machine learning (ML): a subset of AI in which algorithms are trained on data sets to become machine learning models capable of performing specific tasks.

    • Deep learning: A subset of ML, in which artificial neural networks (AANs) that mimic the human brain are used to perform more complex reasoning tasks without human intervention.
    • Natural Language Processing (NLP): A subset of computer science, AI, linguistics, and ML focused on creating software capable of interpreting human communication.

    In this course you will cover the basics of AI and its applications, the different levels of AI and how much influence they will have on the workplace. You will learn how it can be applied to the work environment and other areas of all industries and the benefits it will bring.

    The course will look at the direction of AI, its benefits and the pitfalls of this type of technology and how you can benefit from it, and how it may be developed for the future.

    You will also write a simple AI programme using Python as the base language to create your own AI model.

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is a prominent current topic. It is an area of computer science that aims to make machines do intelligent thing. This course will introduce you to that world of AI and its application. It will start at the basic level of knowledge and is designed to provide a good understanding of how AI works and where and how it can be applied. The challenges of AI are still apparent as it can only make decisions based on the knowledge at hand.

  • Entry Requirements

    This is a programme for adults aged 19+ there are no formal entry requirements.

    Basic computing skills are required.

  • Qualification

    Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of attendance.

  • Progression

    Students who successfully complete this course can progress to Level 4 modules in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

  • Assessment

    Completion of learning tasks set within the classroom computer environment. There is a short assessment at the end of each session.

  • Home Study

    Reading around the subject set for the following day and developing your computer language skills.
