Develop your practical teaching skills and gain the preparation needed to work in a wide range of teaching contexts. This is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practise requirement. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching and be responsible for planning these hours.


  • Description

    This is an 'in service' qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment.

    The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector, such as:

    • the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
    • inclusive teaching and learning approaches
    • assessment of learners
    • facilitating learning and development for individuals
    • facilitating learning and development in groups
    • understanding principles and practices of assessment
  • Entry Requirements

    Students should already have the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, and English and Maths qualifications at Level 2 and be able to demonstrate that these skills are current.

    All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching and be the person planning these hours.

  • Qualification

    VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

  • Progression

    Successful students with sufficient teaching hours may want to progress on to the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching and Education.

  • Assessment

    Assessment is through assignment writing and observation of teaching sessions.

  • Home Study

    Students should be prepared to complete between six and ten hours of additional research and work outside of class time.

  • Work Placement

    Students must have a minimum of 30 hours of teaching during the course.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    Tuition fees for this programme are £1440 and £100 registration fees. It is recommended that students access a range of reference books. These could be purchased or borrowed from a library. Some articles are available on line.
