Watercolour Painting
This course explores a variety of different painting techniques in watercolours, including flat washes, variegated washes, wet in wet, wet in dry and a variety of texturing techniques. Students develop their visual awareness of shape, perspective, composition and colour. Suitable for all levels.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and rules regarding social distancing this course will be taught via blended learning. The course will include both online and face to face teaching sessions. All sessions will be scheduled at the times indicated below.
? The course tutor will provide live teaching sessions online using Microsoft Teams.
? Selected sessions will be available for a small number of students on a rota basis at the college. All face to face sessions will also be streamed online to ensure all learners can fully participate in every session. Your course tutor will arrange with you a rota for coming into the college.
? If you are not attending in person, you will participate in the session from home via Microsoft Teams.
? Learners who are unable to attend face to face sessions can still enrol onto the course and attend all sessions online.
Learners will also be able to access a wide range of College services including Moodle, Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One Drive) and Microsoft Teams to support online learning. Induction sessions will be held prior to the start of the course, to allow learners to familiarise themselves with the online learning platforms.

Description
This course is designed for all abilities and allows learners to explore the expressive potential of watercolour. Preliminary drawing will heighten learners' visual awareness of shape, perspective, composition and colour. This course will contain demonstrations, individual tuition and discussion. Learners will experiment with a wide range of watercolour techniques including flat washes, variegated washes, wet into wet, wet onto dry and a variety of texturing techniques. There will be opportunities to paint on different surface papers such as rough and smooth. Learners will be taught at a level appropriate to their ability and subject matter will include still life, landscape, portraits and animals.
Learning Outcomes
- Make accurate preliminary drawings in pencil.
- Understand colour mixing and colour theory.
- Paint using 'wet into wet' technique.
- Paint 'wet onto dry' using glazing technique.
- Paint using variegated washes.
- Paint using texturing techniques.
*PLEASE NOTE- The running of this course is subject to receiving sufficient enrolment numbers. Newbury College reserve the right to close, cancel or postpone a course if it has not received the minimum required enrolment number by the scheduled start date. In the case of cancellation, enrolled students are notified approximately one week before the start date.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Qualification
This course contains a short, accredited qualification, which consists of planning and carrying out several different painting projects using a range of taught skills. Students keep a portfolio and photographic evidence of work which will be assessed internally by Newbury College and externally via the awarding body. Upon successful completion of the qualification, students are awarded the Entry 3 or Level one Award in Learning, Employability and Progression for Art and Design Skills.

Progression
Students can progress to any number of painting or drawing courses at Newbury College. The tutor can advise the best path of progression for the individual. The next course in this series is Painting in Acrylics.

Assessment
Learners' work will be assessed by the tutor throughout the course and progress will be discussed with each learner. Learners' attainment will be recorded against the assessment criteria. Peer reviews and group discussions, reviewing completed work, will also form an important part of assessment as well as quizzes and questions and answers. Students will create a portfolio of work which will be assessed internally by Newbury College and externally via the awarding body.

Home Study
Homework will be set but will be completed on a voluntary basis. One or two hours per week would be sufficient to complete homework.

Students do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Fees and Additional Costs
The price below includes an additional £10 materials fee, which covers the cost of materials used during the session. Students will be required to purchase some of their own materials.

Fee information
14 - 18 year olds
In most cases students aged 14-18 years old on a substantial study programme will NOT be required to pay fees and most course-specific equipment and materials will be funded by the College. This excludes stationary, non-curriculum trips and a £15 enrichment fee.
19 years and over
Students aged 19 years and over may be required to pay fees. For details of fee remission and loans for students over the age of 19 click here.
