 Business Administrator Apprenticeship

Why did you want to become an apprentice?

I wanted to become an apprentice because I decided I didn’t want to go to university for seven years to pursue a career in. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for my career but I knew I wanted to further my knowledge. The Business Administrator Level 3 Apprenticeship was perfect for me because I got to work within three different departments which gave me the opportunity to see what I was good at and which departments interested me the most.

What interests you most about your industry/subject area?

The thing that interests me most about the Business Administrator Level 3 Apprenticeship is the flexibility. I have been given tasks that allow me to go to other departments and learn from them, for example, I was given a task on invoices so I was able to use what I had learned within a couple of weeks in the Finance Department. The business administration tasks also encourage you to find out more about the company and sometimes you find out things that you never would have known. The tasks are also very different, for example, one week it can be about project management and then another it could be about proposals. This keeps the apprenticeship interesting as there is always something different to do.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

I really enjoyed my final project of making an Apprentice Guide because it has given me the opportunity to reflect back on everything I have achieved throughout my apprenticeship. It has also allowed me to work closely with the other apprentices throughout the company. Another project in particular I loved was the Proposal project because I was able to take an idea which was my own and propose it to the HR Business Partner at Stryker.

How has the apprenticeship programme, including any college or work-based training, supported your career development?

This apprenticeship programme has significantly impacted my career because it has encouraged me to get involved with other departments and learn more about the company. Due to the flexibility of working within three different departments, I have gained lots of experience which will open up many doors for my future and has also help me to identify my strengths.

What do you hope to do once you complete your apprenticeship?

Once I have completed my apprenticeship I am going to complete a degree with the Open University whilst working in a full-time job. For my Open University degree, I have chosen Design and Innovation so I can still pursue my passion and learn about business management. For my job, I would like to find another role to further my skills in Events or Human Resources. In the long term, it would be nice to complete a Business Management course and learn more about managing people.

Abbie's line manager at Stryker commented:

We have had a Business Apprentice in our team now for 18 months and it has been invaluable. We have had extra support from them when needed during extremely busy times in the team, but also it has been a pleasure to watch them learn and grow as individuals.
